rowyo is a PC Program which provides a new way to train on any rowing machine: a programmable metronome with visual and audio feedback. The user follows on-screen stroke animation and synchronisation audio cues which define the timing of each stroke.

Rowing power is really about Stroke Rate and Stroke Timing. Combining these two we have the rhythm or Cadence of a stroke, and for a given stroke length, cadence is the primary thing that defines how hard a rower is working and therefore the speed. Focussing on the ratio of the power stroke (pull) time to the recovery time results in concentration on power and speed.

rowyo provides the means to run defined workouts which can be tailored to meet specific objectives, whether general fitness, aerobic training, weight management or competitive training. An editor is built-in to allow users to modify and create their own workouts, and users can also download workouts from this web site and share workouts with other rowyo users.

Club rowers who wish to do synchronised erg training will discover that rowyo is the perfect tool for this. Even without any mechanical linkage, it is possible for crews to synchronise 'side by side' on multiple rowers, even through complex workouts such as interval training, pyramid training etc.

rowyo workouts may incorporate smooth transitions from one rate and/or power stroke time to another, or step changes. Programmed duration rests may be incorporated for interval workouts, and comments may be defined at any stage of the workout for information and motivation purposes!

Workout progress is indicated by a graph of both stroke rate (in yellow) and power stoke (in red). Workouts can readily be defined which change stroke rate, power time or both:

Optional audio effects are provided for both stroke synchronisation and general alerts (e.g. attention, go, rest now, session completed) - it is possible to row a complete rowyo workout without sight of the PC screen.

For simple 'steady state' sessions it is also possible to run rowyo in free-run mode where controls are provided to adjust Stroke Rate and Power Time at will. One application for this Free-Run mode is coaches can adjust and optimise stroke timings in 'Real Time' while rowers train.
